Biography

Matthew hails from Cape Town, South Africa, the son of a prominent doctor. Growing up as a surf-rat on the Cape Peninsula didn't quite prepare him for the madness of New York City where his family emigrated in his early teens.

Inspired by the great actors to be found on the New York stage, Matthew enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, and began his professional acting career. While subsequently training at the renowned Guildhall School of Drama in London, England, he periodically set off across Europe with a backpack and his journal. Writing became an important part of his life which continues to this day.

Returning to New York City, Matthew appeared in many stage productions. After landing major roles in two independent feature films, Matthew left New York for Los Angeles. Less than a month after his arrival in Los Angeles, he landed his first lead in a feature film as Elder Allen in GOD'S ARMY. This film and his performance has received an outstanding response from audiences and the national press.

Matthew plays the second lead in the feature film MARKED, which he wrote. MARKED is currently in post-production and is schedule for a late 2001 release. Shortly after the completion of the principle photography on this film, Matthew teamed up again with the makers of GOD'S ARMY, this time as Deputy Terry Woodruff in the feature film BRIGHAM CITY.

As a writer, Matthew wrote his first short story at the age of 6 about magic and sorcery while still living in South Africa. He is currently completing a novel, tentatively titled O SEASONS O CASTLES. He is also currently working on another screenplay called LEAVING THE CAPE, that tells the story of a South African teen who is plunged into the foreign world of New York City.

Matthew is an active member of the Los Angeles Zoo. He also serves as a volunteer for the INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE TROPICAL RAINFOREST. Matthew is deeply committed to their new project: the preservation and protection of the Amazonian River Dolphin. In addition to fund raising efforts, he will be visiting the Amazon this year on the organization's behalf.

Matthew continues to make his home in Los Angeles.
